The making of A Material-Led Store for Titanium Outdoor Gear
Vargo makes titanium cookware, stoves and stakes for ultralight backpacking. We built their Shopify store — dealer route, guarantee, free shipping. See how.

Challenges
- The brand sells on material, not category — a buyer looks for a titanium pot rather than camping cookware, so the collection architecture had to follow the search behaviour instead of a conventional product taxonomy
- Serving retail customers and prospective dealers from a single storefront, where a wholesale enquiry and a consumer purchase want completely different journeys
- Demand is sharply seasonal — search interest for ultralight backpacking gear runs roughly nine times higher at the summer peak than at its spring trough, so the storefront has to carry a very uneven load across the year
Solution
Vargo has been manufacturing titanium gear since 2002, when founder Brian Vargo came off the Appalachian Trail convinced that great outdoor kit meant pairing the best material with simple, functional design. The catalogue runs from stoves and cook pots to tent stakes, trekking poles, utensils, water bottles and external-frame packs. The storefront runs on Shopify with Dawn forked into a branch-based workflow, and the merchandising is organised around the material rather than the product type: almost every collection is named for titanium, because that is the word customers actually search and the reason they pay a premium. Around the catalogue sit the things a manufacturer selling direct, through retailers and through affiliates all at once needs — a dealer route, an ambassador programme, a lifetime guarantee, climate-neutral credentials and a free-shipping threshold.

Design
The interface gets out of the way so the metal can do the talking. A black bar, a white ground and one orange accent reserved for what is new — no secondary palette, because every product photograph already arrives carrying titanium grey and whatever landscape it was shot in. The category row makes the strategy explicit: TITANIUM is set as a kicker above every tile, so the material is repeated six times before a visitor has scrolled past the fold. The story pages break that restraint on purpose, running full-bleed trail photography and a mapped Appalachian Trail timeline — the founder's 2,190-mile walk is the brand's origin, so it gets the one place where the design raises its voice.

Headings
Proxima Nova
Set in its Bold weight for every section heading. A humanist sans with short, level strokes — it reads as engineered rather than rugged, which suits a brand selling on material tolerance instead of adventure imagery.
Body copy
Arial
Carrying all running text. An unshowy grotesque that stays out of the way of specification tables and gram weights, where legibility at small sizes matters more than personality.
What we built
Material-Led Catalogue
Titanium water bottles, pots and mugs, stoves, backpacks, knives, trekking poles and utensils — each tile carrying TITANIUM as a kicker above the category name, matching how buyers search.
Dealer and Wholesale Route
A become-a-dealer path running alongside direct retail, so stockists and end customers can both be served from one storefront without confusing either.
The Vargo Guarantee, Published
A 100% Vargo Guarantee backed by a lifetime warranty, published as its own page beside the return policy — gear that gets carried into the backcountry is bought on the strength of what happens when it fails.
Climate-Neutral Credentials
A climate-neutral page carrying the certification, which for an outdoor brand is a purchase reason rather than a corporate footnote.
Reviews Where They Count
Judge.me ratings and written reviews on the product pages — peer verdicts matter disproportionately when the buyer is choosing kit for a multi-day trip.
Free Shipping Over $49
A threshold pitched just above the price of a single small titanium item, which turns a stake or a spork into a two-item basket.
A Deliberately Narrow Header
Shop Gear and Our Story are the only two nav items, with a phone number in the bar above — a manufacturer's storefront rather than a marketplace, and it keeps the catalogue one click deep.
Ambassador and Affiliate Channel
A 10% commission programme for backpackers, bloggers and outdoor media, giving the brand a third route to market alongside direct sales and stockists.
Product Pages That Argue the Case
Feature and spec accordions, dimensioned drawings, customer photos and press clippings — a $49.95 titanium stove still gets the editorial treatment, because the buyer is comparing grams and BTUs.
